Fire disrupts LRT services

KUALA LUMPUR: The light rail transit (LRT) users today were alarmed after smoke engulfed one of the train’s coach when nearing the Setiawangsa station this morning.

City Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Azizan Ismail said the department received a distress call at 8.31am and five firemen from the Keramat fire station were deployed to the scene.

"We arrived at the scene seven minutes later and saw heavy smokes at one of the four coaches.

"At that time, LRT staff has emptied the coach and the train were moved to a safer place," he said.

The fire was put off at 9.20am.

Azizan said initial investigation revealed the fire was caused by a faulty brake.

He added no injuries were recorded in the incident.

Meanwhile, at 12.30pm another LRT of the Kelana Jaya line encountered a faulty brake as well near the Universiti station.

However, a Prasarana Malaysia Bhd spokesman said the problem had been resolved and the service was back on track at 12.45pm.
