Parts of George Town flooded

GEORGE TOWN: As predicted, another round of heavy rain hit parts of the island following the 'supermoon' thunderstorms this morning.

The downpour began at about 6am, with wind gusts of 11km/h, according to online weather forecast - weather.com.

Early observations at 8am found Jalan Hutton and Jalan Transfer in the inner city areas to be in water, causing a massive gridlock during the rush hour period.

According to an email by the Citizen Awareness Chant group, the Westlands, Pykett and Victoria Green area off Jalan Burma are also under water.

"Why after 30 minutes of rain, the place is flooded?

"What is the Penang Government and the Penang Island City Council doing to protect the area from floods?" the statement read.

On Tuesday evening, a similar storm hit parts of Penang, including mainland Butterworth.

At least 300 homes were affected in the four-hour rain.

The so-called supermoon thunderstorm occurs when the moon is closest to Earth.

It appears 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than when it is at its farthest distance.

State Welfare, Caring Society and Environment committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the flash floods are turning into an ‘annual’ event, due to high tide during the supermoon period.

“It is more apparent during the sixth and seventh lunar moon of the year.

“This phenomenon happens during the period and the weather condition of southwest and northwest winds blowing in from Indian Ocean," he told the NST.
