KUALA TERENGGANU: Continuous heavy rain since last night has caused flooding in several areas in Terengganu.
Kuala Nerus became the first district in the state to be hit by floods, with one temporary flood relief centre (PPS) opened at the Tok Jembal multipurpose hall at 7am today.
Kuala Nerus Disaster Management Committee secretariat member Azulkarnain Awang @ Abdul Aziz said the centre was opened after water began rising in Taman Permai Murni about 4am.
He said efforts to evacuate residents of the housing area were ongoing.
"Currently, rain is still falling here and we are in the process of moving flood victims to the PPS," he said.
The Malaysian Meteorological Services Department (MetMalaysia) had yesterday issued a heavy rain alert in Terengganu, which it said would continue till today.
MetMalaysia said the alert was effective in Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun and Kemaman.
