MCMC blocks sites promoting Bersih 4.0

KUALA LUMPUR: Websites promoting or disseminating information on Bersih 4.0 will be blocked to prevent any untoward incidents that threaten the nation’s stability, said the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

“MCMC has decided to block websites which promote, disseminate information and encourage people to participate in the Bersih 4.0 rally, which could undermine the country’s stability,” it said in a statement on MCMC’s official Facebook page today following a press statement by the Home Ministry.

It said the Home Ministry statement read that Bersih 4.0 had engaged in unlawful activities and had created a worrisome situation, as well as raised concern among the public and Malaysians of all races, religions and ethnicities.

“It (Bersih) has spread propaganda to turn the people against the government by distributing pamphlets that may lead to detrimental consequences.

“Through the various activities that it has organised, it could tarnish the country’s image, as well as pose threat and affect public order, security, economic prosperity, sovereignty of the state and harmony in Malaysia’s plural society.”

MCMC, therefore, reminded the public to me more cautious in sharing information on websites and social media, particularly contents that could violate any laws of Malaysia.

The commission said any information regarding any website or social media sites that is believed to be spreading contents that threatens the country’s stability, public order and economic stability can be forwarded to the MCMC at aduanskmm@cmc.gov.my (http://aduan.skmm.gov.my).
