Manufacturers of uncertified building materials face fines up to RM500,000 says CIDB

KUALA LUMPUR: Manufacturers of building materials must get their products certified by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) by Jan 1, while construction personnel have up to June 1 next year to register themselves with the board. Failure to do so will see them being slapped with fines ranging from RM5,000 to a maximum of RM500,000. CIDB Operations Sector Senior General Manager Megat Kamil Azmi Megat Rus Kamarani said the penalties were outlined under the Construction Industry Development Board Act 1994 (Amended 2011), also known as Act 520. “Manufacturers of building materials listed in the Fourth Schedule of Act 520 (Amended 2011) who fail to get their products certified can be charged under Section 33D (1) or Section 33D (2) (Certification of Building Materials). “Anyone dealing in building materials whose quality has not been certified by CIDB can, if convicted, be fined not less than RM10,000 and up to a maximum of RM500,000,” he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, Section 33 (Registration of Construction Personnel) of the Act requires all personnel, aged 16 and above, involved in construction activities to be registered with CIDB, as well as hold a valid certification of registration.

CIDB-REGISTER 2 (LAST) KUALA LUMPUR “If they are caught working without proper registration and accreditation papers, they can be slapped with a fine not exceeding RM5,000. Similar fines will also be imposed on the employers of workers who are not accreditated to carry out construction work,” said Megat Kamil Azmi. He said CIDB has given enough grace period to manufacturers and construction industry workers to get the necessary certification and registration done and advised them not to wait until the last minute to do so. Manufacturers can visit ccpm.cidb.gov.my to apply to have their building materials certified for free. Following the Jan 1 deadline, they will be charged a fee of RM1,500 for each new application and RM750 for each renewal.

Building materials that meet CIDB’s certification standards will be issued a Standard Compliance Certificate as proof that they have been certified by the board. Construction personnel who wish to get their skills certified can register with CIDB directly by calling its Careline at 1-300-88-2432. – BERNAMA
