MALACCA: Hundreds of shoppers and workers of a shopping mall had a scare when they were forced to evacuate the premise due to a fire.

It was believed that a small fire broke out at the end of left wing of the shopping complex in Peringgit here, at about 7pm.

Jalan Kubu Fire and Rescue Department chief Yazid Mohd Tahir said 15 firemen responded to a distress call at 7.59pm and arrived at the scene with three fire engines at 8.03pm.

"The fire was brought to control at 8.17pm. There was no structural damage and no casualties reported," he told reporters here, yesterday.

He said fire was detected in between the floor partitions of level 1 and 2.

"Initial investigation revealed that there was a spread of embers in the wiring but our Emergency Response Team (ERT) was swift to put a stop to it."

He added that Thermal Imaging Camera was used to locate hidden fire.

"We are still investigating the cause of fire," he said.

The shopping mall continued its operations two hours later.
