Sultan of Selangor's Cup match cancelled due to haze

SHAH ALAM: The much anticipated Sultan of Selangor's Cup football match scheduled to be held tonight has been cancelled due to the haze.

Its organising chairman Tan Sri Abdul Karim Munisar said the match between Selangor selection and Singapore's best players was cancelled because the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah was concerned for the health of the players and the fans.

"An announcement will be made soon regarding ticket refunds," said Karim.

The Air Pollutant Index in Shah Alam remained in the unhealthy range floating at around 130 to 140 today.

At 5pm, the API in Shah Alam was 135.

It took months of intensive preparation to set the stage for the annual football match.

Some 80,000 fans were expected to watch the game at Shah Alam Stadium.

The curtain raiser match between the Selangor and Singapore veterans was slated to kick-off at 8pm tonight while the main match between the Selangor Selection and Singapore Selection was scheduled to start at 9pm.

Last year, Selangor won the prestigious match for the third straight time.

In that year, Selangor scored two goals to win against S-League Selection who scored one while the Selangor veterans and their Singapore counterparts played to a 1-1 draw.

Selangor have won the trophy seven times while Singapore have done so on five occasions since the Sultan of Selangor's Cup was founded in 2001.
