KUALA LUMPUR: Mohamad Saifuddin Ishak won the bronze in his first showing at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championship in Doha, Qatar on Saturday.

The 23-year-old national elite athlete secured the medal in the Men’s Long Jump T12 event (Visually Impaired) at the Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium, after his fourth attempt of 6.94 metres.

The gold went to Kamil Aliyev of Azerbaijan (7.13 metres), while the silver, to Chen Mingyu of China (7.07 metres).

In this respect, Mohd Saifuddin bettered his 6.84 metres’ achievement at the Asian Para Games in Incheon, South Korea last year that won him the gold.

Malaysia earlier picked its first gold medal through Abdul Latif Romly, 18, in the Men’s Long Jump F20 event (Learning Disability).

The athlete also set a new record in the IPC championships with his leap of 7.35 metres. --Bernama
