Motion to limit Penang CM's term fails to get support

GEORGE TOWN: A motion to limit the term of the Chief Minister and to set a fixed date for General Election was dismissed by the State Legislative Assembly today.

Teh Yee Cheu (DAP-Tanjung Bungah) filed the motion for consideration of the State Constitution Committee, but did not receive support from the members of the assembly.

"I would like to refer to the amendment of the state constitution to have the chief ministership limited to two terms and to set a fixed date for General Elections.

"I would like my proposal to be heard by the State Constitution Committee," he said in his motion during the winding-up session.

Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang then asked the members of the assembly who supported the motion to stand up.

However, no one stood up.

Teh had demanded for a debate on limiting the chief ministership to two terms for the past three years in the August house, but failed to garner support from either side of the political divide.

Today's filing of motion under Section 34(4) of the Assembly standing orders marks the first time he had filed for a motion to be tabled, rather than a debate.
