Teen fails driving test, leaps off Penang bridge

BUTTERWORTH: The 17-year-old, who is thought to have jumped off the Penang Bridge three days ago, has been found safe near the Penang Port Sdn Bhd area here today.

The female victim was discovered in a weakened state by the port's fire department officers.

Penang Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department Senior Operation Commander Faris Izwan Ahmad Fadzilah said they received a call about the discovery at 10.25am.

He said the victim, who did not suffer serious injuries, received initial treatment before being taken to Seberang Jaya Hospital (HSJ) for further care.

"The victim was in a weakened state and is currently receiving treatment at HSJ.

"The case has been handed over to the police, and the operation ended at 10.51am," he said when contacted here today.

Earlier, the search and rescue operation for the teenager was conducted by a team from Perai fire station with assistance from the Water Rescue Unit of Butterworth fire station after receiving a call at 11.23am on Thursday.

The victim reportedly left her motorcycle at Kilometre 2.2 heading towards the island before leaping from the bridge.

Faris also said that right after jumping from the bridge, the victim was said to have swum before getting stuck in the mangrove trees and mud near the port.

Over the course of two days, the victim waved multiple times at members of the public exercising in the neighbourhood, but no one noticed.

"Around 9am today, she attempted to signal to the port fire department officer before being rescued by an individual.

"The victim was reportedly distressed due to failing the driving test twice and fearing reprimand from her aunt who is taking care of her.

"She then took her aunt's motorcycle before stopping on the bridge and jumping into the sea," he said.
