Sungai Petani hit by flash floods

SUNGAI PETANI: Several areas and villages in the Sungai Petani district were hit by flash floods following heavy rain since around 3.20pm today.

Kuala Muda Civil Defence Department (JPAM) officer Azahar Ahmad said among the affected areas included Jalan Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim, Taman Nuri, Taman Serindik, Air Mendidih, Jalan Batu Lintang of Kampung Hutan Gelam, Taman Berlian, Taman Teratai Sungai Layar, Taman Desa Jaya, Kampung Raja, Kampung Haji Wahab and Kampung Batu 2 Ward Siam.

"The heavy rain which started around 3.20pm caused the water level to rise from about 0.5m up to 1m deep.

"The flood situation improved around 5.30pm as the heavy rain eased up.

"There were no victims evacuated to relief centres. We only assisted them in moving to higher ground with their belongings, including vehicles," said Azahar.

Azahar said other government agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department and the police were also involved in the rescue operation.
