Nurul Izzah could face Rights & Privileges Committee over Kiram meeting

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is set to put forward a motion to refer Nurul Izzah Anwar to Parliament's Rights and Privileges Committee.

This is to enable the Lembah Pantai member of parliament to explain her controversial meeting with so-called 'Sulu princess' Jacel Kiram.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, in a statement today, said the government has decided to put forward a motion under Standing Orders 27(3) and 80 to refer Nurul Izzah to the committee, which will give her an opportunity to explain herself.

It is understood that the motion could take place today as it is present in the Dewan Rakyat's Order Paper.

The PKR vice-president's meeting with the 'Sulu Royal family', said Azalina, is a blunt gesture of disloyalty to the country.

The Sulu family, under the leadership of the late Jamalul Kiram III, ordered the Lahad Datu incursion in 2013 which led to the death of Malaysian security personnel.

"Despite her (Nurul Izzah) attempts of apologizing, as an honourable member of the August House her conduct is unacceptable, contrary to the oath she took that is to solemnly protect the nation and uphold our Constitution which whereby means she is fully aware of her responsibilities and particularly in the matter of our national sovereignty.

"The crux of the matter is that she failed to answer clear questions about her meeting with Jacel Kiram," said Azalina.

Azalina said, given the current occurring behavioural misconducts of certain MPs, a code of ethical conduct must be a matter of priority to regulate the MPs especially in meeting foreign groups.

"There can be no compromise here nor is any attempt by any Parliamentarian to breach their oath to the August House will be tolerated," she said.
