Tenom heaves sigh of relief as floods subside

TENOM: All relief centres here have been closed after the water level receded in flooded areas.

As of noon, 136 villagers from Labut 1, Mendalom Lama and Lalandang have been allowed to return to their homes.

Relief centres in Ponontomon, Labut 2 and Pantongan Saga, which hosted 450 people were closed at 2.30pm.

District officer Madiyem Layapan said, "The rain appears to have ceased. But even after we close the relief centres, the natural disaster committee will continue to monitor the situation here in case the floods recur.

"The Welfare Department will also continue to provide food assistance to flood victims in the next three days," he said.
