Hundreds seek refuge at 3 Kelantan flood relief centres

KOTA BARU: Three temporary flood relief centres were opened in the state tonight to accommodate 594 victims from 181 families, following an onslaught of flooding.

Two relief centres were set up in Bachok - accommodating 254 victims at SMK Beris Panchor and another 114 victims at SK Jelawat. Additionally, in Rantau Panjang, SK Tok Deh provided shelter for 226 individuals.

As at 7.30pm, Golok river in Rantau Panjang had surged to a height of 8.55 metres, surpassing its warning level by 0.55 metres.

Three more rivers - Kelantan river in Kota Baru, Golok river in Tumpat, and Semerak river in Pasir Puteh have all breached their alert thresholds.

Since the monsoon season hit the state on Nov 19, three lives have been claimed by the floods.

The first victim, a 23-month-old toddler, met a tragic fate in the river close to his home in Kampung Kenali.

On Tuesday, a nine-year-old boy was discovered drowned in an irrigation canal at Kampung Derdap and yesterday, a 17-year-old youth lost his life while fishing at a river in Kampung Bukit Gading, Tanah Merah.
