Two policemen injured after being rammed during Perak high-speed chase

BIDOR: Two policemen were injured when they were rammed by a car driven by two teenagers during a high speed chase here last night.

The two policemen, Lance Corporal Muhaini Mahamawi, 26; and Voluntary Police Constable Sivapraksam Krisnan, 22; were conducting crime prevention rounds around at Kampung Chang, Jalan Paku here at 10.30pm when the incident occurred.

Tapah District Police Chief Superintendent Som Sak Din Keliaw said the policemen spotted two people in a Perodua Kancil. Their behaviour aroused the suspicion of the policemen, who then approached the car.

“However, the car suddenly sped off towards Jalan Bruseh.

"The policemen, who were on motorcycles, gave chase. Instructions to the suspects to stop were ignored, with the car running a red light near the Bidor toll plaza towards Kampung Poh," he said.

After running past the lights, the car suddenly made a U-turn. The driver gunned the engine and rammed into Sibaprakasam’s motorcycle, causing him to fall down.

Som Sak said the car then reversed and hit Sivaprakasam for a second time before turning the occupants turned their attention to Muhaini.

“Muhaini managed to avoid a direct collision with the incoming car but was grazed. The suspects then fled towards Bidor.

Both policemen reported the incident and were rushed to the Tapah Hospital.

Muhaini sustained injuries on his left leg while Sivapraksam was injured on the leg and left hand.

The two suspects were later apprehended at Km 61 of Jalan Ipoh-Kuala Lumpur by policemen from the district police headquarters.

The two suspects turned out to be a teenager aged 19, and a 21-year-old. Both tested positive for drug use.

They were remanded to assist investigation.
