Daughter-in-law attack: Mother-in-law sent to Tanjung Rambutan

BUKIT MERTAJAM : The fate of two sisters, in their 60s, who violently attacked a family member was announced today at the Bukit Mertajam Sessions Court.

Lee Wei Mei, 66, who was acquitted by reason of insanity in the violent attack of her daughter-in-law, Julie Yeoh Kar Tin will be sent to Hospital Tanjung Rambutan in Perak for mental illness treatment.

However, her younger sister Lee Wei Chee, 63, who also attacked the victim, was found guilty by the court and was sentenced to 18 years of jail.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Mursyidi Peet today.

The duo were charged for three offences under Section 307, 326 and 436 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, voluntarily causing grievous hurt using dangerous weapons and causing mischief by fire or explosive substances with intent to destroy a premises or building.

Both sisters were charged with committing the offence in the victims home at Block S of the Taman Hussein flats in Seberang Jaya at around 4pm on May 8, 2012.

The sisters also set Yeoh’s flat alight with petrol.

Yeoh, a 43-year-old teacher suffered 45 per cent burns on her body and face.

She was stabbed numerous times with a four-inch fruit knife by her mother-in-law.

Wei Mei was represented by Dev Kumaraendran, and Wei Chee was represented by Y. Anbananthan, who said he would file an appeal for his client at the High Court soon.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kamaliza Md Zain prosecuted.
