Announcement of new Selangor councillors soon, says Azmin

KUALA LUMPUR: There will be no postponement on the announcement date for the 288 councillors' posts in the 12 local authorities in Selangor.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali said the effective date of new councillors to be appointed remains on Jan 16, and the announcement of names would be made soon.

Speaking to reporters after launching the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) Smart Bus ‎programme today, Azmin said their (political parties) views would be taken into consideration.

He said: "Discussions have been held. Their views have been aired. The state government will consider it (their participation) and the effective date remains the same. No delays."

Acknowledging that there may be "noises" made by the parties, Azmin said it was part of the democratic process and their views would be considered as it was for the betterment of Selangor.

Selangor has been in discord over sharing of local council seats with newly-formed Parti Amanah Negara. The party now wants at least two seats in each of the 12 local councils.

Currently, PKR holds 120 seats, DAP (92) and Pas (67), while nine others are reserved for the Orang Besar Daerah. PKR and DAP leaderships are willing to accommodate Amanah by sacrificing some of their own council seats, but Pas is against letting go of their seats.

It is learnt that the new term for local councillors will begin mid-Jan for two city councils; Petaling Jaya and Shah Alam; six municipal councils (Ampang Jaya, Kajang, Klang, Selayang, Sepang and Subang Jaya) and four district councils (Hulu Selangor, Kuala Langat, Kuala Selangor, and Sabah Bernam).
