Pas will not join BN, says party's Syura Council

KUALA LUMPUR: Pas’s powerful Syura Council has given the go-ahead for the Islamic party to cooperate with any party for the sake strengthening Islam, but ruled out the possibility of joining Barisan Nasional.

In a statement today, Pas Syura Council secretary-general Datuk Dr Nik Mohd Zawawi Salleh said the decision was made after taking into account the Islamic principle of cooperation and helping others.

“One of the Islamic principles upheld by Pas is to cooperate and help (others) in matters that promote goodness and piety. This is based on the Al-Quran,” he said.

Nik Mohd Zawawi, in the statement, cited chapter 5, verse 2 of the Quran on acts of piety and charity, as well as a hadith on preventing others from committing evil.

“Based on those texts, the Pas Syura Council, which convened on January 2, 2016, agreed to continue the agenda of cooperating with any party in matters that promote goodness and piety.

“The Syura Council also stressed that Pas will not join Barisan Nasional,” he said.

The Syura Council is Pas's highest decision-making body and is made up of Islamic scholars who determine whether the party's policies are in line with Islamic principles.
