Police calls off search for missing 70-year-old hiker Gan Cheng Lim at Gunung Ruil

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: The search for missing 70-year-old hiker Gan Cheng Lim at Gunung Ruil here has been called off as authorities failed to find any lead that he was at the hill.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Muhammad Rizal Kamarudin however said efforts to locate the avid mountaineer was still ongoing.

"We decided to call off the search operation at noon as rescuers who went up the hill twice failed to locate him," he said when contacted here yesterday.

Rizal said information obtained by police was that Gan had wanted to study the Rafflesias here.

"The area where Rafflesia is known to exist is at Gua Musang, Kelantan," he said, adding that police were checking with workers at Lojing if they had seen Gan.

Those with information on Gan have been urged to come forward and contact the nearest police station.

It was reported that Gan's younger brother Chong Shiuan had lodged a missing person's report on Jan 15 after failing to locate him at his house at Setapak.

Meanwhile, fellow mountaineer Woody Woo said his friends would search for Gan at Gunung Berembun and Gunung Chantek.

"We are offering a RM1,000 reward for information that can lead to locating him," he said.
