Selangor testing raw water bought from Pahang for bauxite pollution

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor state government's economic planning unit (UPEN) is currently studying and testing the raw water supply it has been buying from Pahang following concerns of the quality due to pollution in rivers caused by bauxite mining.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali said the unit had last week looked back at the agreement signed between the two governments under the Pahang-Selangor Raw Water Channelling Project (PPAMPS) amid worries over contamination because of bauxite mining.

"In the agreement, Pahang promised good quality water that ensured the safety of Selangor folk. The water from Pahang will of course be treated but if the quality falls in the dangerous category, the cost to treat it will burden the people.

"UPEN has started studies and expects to take two months to complete it. Based on the results, we will decide our next course of action. We need to see if the rate charged to us is fair," he said earlier today.

Selangor currently forks out 10 sen for one cubic metre of raw water from Pahang in the agreement signed by Azmin's predesssor Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

Azmin was speaking after attending Aeon Co (M) Bhd's Hometown Forest Programme at the Aeon Mall Shah Alam in Section 13 today.

The tree planting initiative, which has been Aeon's tradition for the past 25 years, is carried out at all of its new malls.
