Mentally-ill man stabs, slashes own mother

KUALA LUMPUR: A religious school teacher was seriously hurt when she was stabbed and slashed by her son in Setapak Jaya, here, last night.

The 8pm incident, which happened at the victim's double-storey terrace house in Jalan Rejang 2, saw the 50-year-old victim sustain a deep stab wound in her stomach and slash wound on her forehead.

Wangsa Maju police chief Superintendent Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif said initial investigation revealed that the woman was attacked by her 21-year-old son, who has a history of mental illness.

"The incident happened when the suspect's elder brother went out at 8pm to fetch another sibling, who was playing at a playground near their house.

"When the two siblings returned about 30 minutes later, they found their mother lying in a pool of blood in the house.

"The woman managed to tell her sons what happened before she was rushed to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital by ambulance," he said.

Roy said the incident was also witnessed by another son of the victim, aged 14.

Police were told by the suspect's father that the suspect is a registered mental patient who holds a psychiatric card, and that the latter had not taken his medicine for about two weeks.

"The suspect had also, while fleeing the scene, smashed two windscreens of his neighbours' cars.

"A manhunt is being carried out to track the suspect."

Roy said police have also seized the knife used in the incident.

He said the victim was reported to be in critical condition.
