GEORGE TOWN: Panic ensued in Bukit Jambul after a man hurled what appeared to be a bomb at a row of ATM machines in the area here earlier this morning.
Police later revealed that a man had walked into a bank branch in i-Avenue at 5.20am and had lit a firecracker in an attempt to break open the teller machine.
The man was spotted on CCTV footage lighting up the fireworks before running to a white car parked outside.
The fireworks cracked one of the glass panels outside, setting off the bank’s alarm.
Southwest district police chief Supt Lai Fah Hin said the suspect had only made away with the detachable front cover of the ATM.
"We have closed-circuit television footage of the suspect and our forensic team are lifting prints from site, " he said in statement this morning.
