DAP lawmaker submits motion to limit Penang Chief Minister's term

GEORGE TOWN: A DAP lawmaker has submitted a private member motion to refer a proposal to limit the tenure of the Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to two terms, to the state Constitutional Committee for further review.

Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu submitted the motion to the State Legislative Assembly secretary this morning.

Teh said the motion was made following a request for change by the people.

"I am adamant this time around to push this motion through.

"I submitted an almost similar motion previously but was rejected by the Speaker.

"I can only hope that this motion will be accepted and discussed in the august house in May," he told reporters here.

Teh had submitted a similar motion without notice to have the Constitutional Committee discuss the possibility to have term limits for the chief minister last year.

The motion however failed to gain the 10 votes required for passage as no one from both sides of the political divide stood up to support during the vote-taking process.

Teh said he had sent the proposal to 10 assemblymen from Pakatan Harapan, whom he believed, would support the motion.

"Machang Bubuk assemblyman Lee Khai Loon, Kebun Bunga assemblyman Cheah Kah Peng and Penanti assemblyman Dr Norlela Ariffin got back to me with some feedback.

"I apologise to them for naming them, but I am doing all this on the interest of transparency," he added.
