News portal reporter investigated for public mischief

KUCHING: Police are investigating a reporter from an online portal for an allegedly misleading article, which was published on Thursday.

Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department Senior Assistant Commissioner Dev Kumar said the case is being investigated under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code.

This followed six reports lodged against the reporter, which alleged that she had spun the words of Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee'.

The article suggested that Annuar had asked Sarawakians to vote for BN in the state election, "so that a Muslim leader can continue to lead the Sarawak government.

Annuar had on the same day the article was published, said the reporter had taken his speech at a seminar in Sibu, out of context.

Dev, when asked said he could not confirm reports circulating on social media, which suggested that the reporter had allegedly left the state abruptly yesterday.

"We are unaware that she had been asked to leave Sarawak by her employer," he told the New Straits Times.
