Sarawak polls: PKR calls on EC to look into entry bans on opposition politicians

KUCHING: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has called upon the Election Commission (EC) to be more vigilant in carrying out their duties to ensure the state election is clean, fair and free from interference.

Its legal team spokesman Simon Siah Sy Jen said campaigns conducted by the party were hampered as several of its leaders and members were denied entry to the state over the past few weeks.

"We are alarmed and worried by the latest incidents in which opposition party campaigners from the Peninsular were restricted and only allowed to stay until May 5.

"This will impact their ability to carry out their campaigning duties as polling and counting agents (PACA) during the polls, thus compromising the integrity of the election.

"The caretaker of the government should come forward and explain whether there is a political motive in such restrictions, as it violates the rights of citizens' movement within the country, putting the state in an awkward position," said Simon at a press conference here, today.

He also said the party would consider lodging a report to the EC on the unfairness of the state government in denying opposition pact members from entering Sarawak without legitimate reason.

Simon, however said this would be a difficult task to carry out as it is was already near election day.
