Body of man who fell off Penang ferry found today

GEORGE TOWN: The body of a man who fell overboard a ferry near the Raja Tun Uda terminal here on Saturday has been found.

The victim has been identified as Tan Sik Lee, 43, from Jalan Berapit in Bukit Mertajam.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mior Farid Alatrash Wahid said Tan's body was spotted by the rescue authorities about 12.30pm.

He said the Civil Defence Department unit members fished the body out from the waters.

"The body was found floating about 200 metres away from where he fell over," Mior Farid said today.

The body has been taken ashore and sent for post mortem examination at the Penang Hospital.

The salvage operation resumed at 8am after it was called off due to darkness late yesterday

It was reported that the man had fallen when the ferry was departing the Raja Tun Uda terminal on the island about 11.25am.

He was seen sitting in the passenger area on the upper deck before falling over.

The ferry's captain then turned off the engine and started to look for the victim.

A pair of slippers were found on the edge of the upper deck.
