DAP lawmaker acquitted of sedition charge

GEORGE TOWN: Tanjong Member of parliament Ng Wei Aik was discharged and acquitted by a Sessions Court here today of a sedition charge.

The 49-year-old DAP lawmaker was accused of making seditious remarks about Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in an article titled ‘Reformation Begins Again’, published in Chinese-language daily Kwong Wah Yit Poh on February 10, 2015.

He was charged under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948.

Judge Ibrahim Osman held that the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case based on two points.

"The prosecution has failed to present the original seditious document the accused was charged with writing.

"The prosecution also failed to prove that the article contained seditious words as there were two translated versions of the article written in Chinese," he said.

He then ordered Ng to be acquitted and discharged.

Deputy public prosecutor Lim Cheah Yit prosecuted, while Ng was represented by Gobind Singh Deo and RSN Rayer.
