SUNGAI PETANI: A 57-year-old man died when his car rammed into the back of a lorry at KM100.8 of the North-South Expressway near here early this morning.
Yaakub Abas, 57, from Kampung Permatang Bonglai Kecil in Air Hitam, Jitra suffered severe injuries to his chest and head in the 6.10am accident.
He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital at 7.02am.
Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Md Zukir Md Isa said Yaakub was driving from Alor Star to Butterworth when the accident occurred.
"The victim was driving behind a lorry that was travelling in the same direction. He suddenly lost control of his car and rammed the back of the lorry.
"We are still investigating the cause of the accident, including the possibility that the victim dozed off at the wheel," he said in a statement.
The lorry driver was unharmed.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
