Tourism Msia boss to know fate on May 30 over alleged Beijing outburst

KUALA LUMPUR: The fate of Tourism Malaysia chairman Wee Choo Keong, following his reported outburst at a tourism fair abroad recently, will be decided after May 30.

Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said he has asked Tourism Malaysia to call for a meeting on May 30 to discuss possible action to be taken on Wee over his alleged actions at the Beijing International Tourism Expo (BITE).

He has also instructed Tourism Malaysia to set up an investigation committee to look into the matter in detail.

“They will then make a recommendation to me so that further action can be taken,” he said in a parliamentary reply to Anthony Loke (DAP-Rasah) who had asked if any action will be taken over the incident.

Wee was reported to have lost his cool at the sight of an AirAsia bunting at the Malaysian booth at the BITE over the weekend.

According to news reports, Wee allegedly berated his staff for having an AirAsia bunting in Tourism Malaysia's pavilion in the expo.

The former Wangsa Maju MP also reportedly physically broke the bunting.

Wee had on Monday denied the claims, saying that while he did instruct the bunting to be moved, it was so that it would not overshadow the overall appearance of the Malaysian booth.

He has also denied breaking the bunting with his bare hands, and labeled the claim as "most vicious."

Nazri said his ministry viewed the matter seriously as China is Malaysia's main tourism market, with four million tourist arrivals targeted this year.

The minister added that AirAsia is also the ministry's strategic partner.

“They have given very good co-operation and they have agreed on our request to open more routes to bring Chinese tourists here to Malaysia."
