Paperplane Pursuit, Bunkface and Dennis Lau to attend Cannes' Midem

KUALA LUMPUR: Three popular acts have been chosen to represent the country at the Marché International du Disque et de l'Edition Musicale (Midem) in Cannes, France from June 3 to 6.

They are pop-rock Paperplane Pursuit and Bunkface; and solo violinist Dennis Lau and they are honoured to be part of the delegation to one of the world’s largest annual international music and audio production business events.

The three outfits were selected based on their achievements and their track record for independently spearheading their own music companies -- Paperplane Pursuit’s Breaking Records, Bunkface’s Bunkface Productions and Lau’s Mosaic Entertainment Group.

Paperplane Pursuit lead vocalist and main lyricist John Oommen, or John O said: “It’s our first time in Europe, and we hope to meet and network with music companies from the continent who can assist us in penetrating the European market. Ultimately, our goal is to penetrate the US market, but we believe in doing things one step at the time, and Europe is a good place to make an international start outside Southeast Asia.”

The band members are drummer Andrew Yap or Dru, guitarist Isaac Ravi and bassist The Chief.

“While it would be great to have a chance to perform in Cannes, Midem is mostly about business networking and idea sharing, and thus the band thanks the Communications and Multimedia Ministry for organising their visit to the annual event,” added Yap.

Meanwhile, Lau said he will be the only artiste with a side activity in Cannes. “I’m going to film my music video there, for my new single Largest Movie, a Jay Chou cover. It’ll take about three days in France, after which I’ll be heading to Ireland for another three days to complete the video.

“I hope to purchase a new violin in Ireland. It’s something I’ve always wanted to own.”

Paperplane Pursuit and Lau spoke to reporters at a Press conference for Midem 2016 at Platinum Sentral, KL Sentral in Brickfields here yesterday.

This marks the fourth consecutive participation by Malaysia at Midem.
