Deadly pursuit: Timeline of Zaharif Affendi murder case

Dec 15, 2023 - Muhammad Zaharif Affendi, 17, is on his way home to Chemor from his school, SMK Jati in Meru, at 12.30 noon when he is embroiled in an encounter with police officer Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak.

According to reports, Zaharif, who was on a motorcycle, was revving his throttle and making a loud din, garnering the attention of the policeman, who was in a Perodua Ativa.

It is unclear what triggers the escalation of events but Zaharif soon speeds away on his motorbike with the Ativa in pursuit.

The pursuit, which lasts almost a kilometre, ends in tragedy when the Ativa knocks into the motorcycle along Jalan Taman Jati, throwing the teenager off.

Reports suggested that he was dragged for almost five metres.

According to reports, a crowd had gathered at the location, following which the Ativa sped away. The policeman lodges a report at a nearby police station.

Zaharif's sister Nur Zawani, a trained nurse, arrives at the scene after being told of the incident. She performs CPR on her brother to no avail. Their father, Muhd Zamrie Zainal Abidin, soon arrives at the location. He cradles his son's head as he helps Zaharif recite the 'syahadah' before his son dies.

His body is brought to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for an autopsy. The cause of death is determined to be chest and abdominal injuries resulting from the crash.

The teenager is laid to rest at the Kampung Kepayang Luar Muslim Cemetery.

The police officer, meanwhile, is arrested and remanded for three days.

Dec 16, 2023 - Nur Zawanie tells reporters that the policeman who had knocked into her brother had returned to the scene after the incident but did nothing to help. She claimed that it was the man's wife who instead came over to apologise for the tragedy.

Nur Zawanie claimed her brother was still alive at the time but was already gasping for breath.

According to Nur Zawanie, the woman told her that her husband had a "short temper" and couldn't stand loud noises from motorcycles.

The family also plead for eyewitnesses to come forward and help verify the events.

Dec 16, 2023 - Posters calling for justice to be upheld following the death of Muhammad Zaharif begin appearing around the Ipoh city centre.

The posters, which bear the words 'Justice for Muhammad Zaharif Affendi' are spotted near the Sessions and Magistrate's Court building here.

Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain says the probe into the teen's murder will be impartial, transparent and comprehensive.

Dec 17, 2023 - Muhammad Zaharif's family engage a lawyer to study the possibility of mounting a civil suit over the boy's death.

Zaharif's sister, Nur Zawani, 28, said they hope the suspect would be charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

"I was at the scene. I saw his (the police officer's) face.

"He was not panicking at all. He was not scared. He just looked like a bystander who happened to be there just to see the accident," she claimed.

Later the same day, Attorney General Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh confirms that the suspect will be charged with murder in the Ipoh Magistrate's Court.

The IGP, moments later, tells Berita Harian that the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) decision demonstrated the police's transparency in the investigation.

He expressed hope that the case served as a lesson to all policemen, reminding them against abusing their badges and tarnishing the force's reputation.

Dec 18, 2023 - Police deputy superintendent Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak is charged in the Ipoh Magistrate's Court with Zaharif's murder.

He was appeared calm when the charge was read out to him. None of his family members were seen in the courtroom gallery. The court set Feb 7 next year for mention pending toxicology reports.
