Man detained for possessing military vehicle and equipment

PUTRAJAYA: Police today detained a telecommunications technician and seized a military vehicle and equipment found in his possession.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Rosly Hassan said the 32-year-old man and the equipment were brought to the district police headquarters for further investigation.

“Based on information received, a Criminal Investigation Department team had gone to the parking lot of a government quarters in Presint 18, at 2.15pm.

"The team found a black 2.4L diesel 4x4 PNG Pinzgauer four-wheel drive vehicle with military camouflage.

“We managed to trace the owner, who appeared at the parking lot 10 minutes later,” Rosly said.

Among the items seized were two green folding camp beds, one 20L silver water container, two military camouflage shirts, a military camouflage raincoat, a uniform with the Rela emblem, a hammock with the words ‘US Army’, a sleeping bag and three mess tins with the words “Malaysian Armed Forces” written on them and a plain mess tin.

The man admitted to having bought the vehicle, a decommissioned vehicle from the Defence Ministry, from a scrap metal company in Penang, for RM20,000 last year.

He had sent the vehicle for restoration and brought it to Puspakom for inspection, and was successful. The vehicle was registered with the Road Transport Department in Wangsa Maju.

Rosly said the man claimed he was an outdoor enthusiast.

The case is being investigated under Section 171 of the Penal Code for wearing clothing or carrying equipment used by public servants, with fraudulent intent.
