'Open car door' leads police to robbers on crime spree

SHAH ALAM: What started off as a simple mystery involving a car door left open near a restaurant, led police to three robbers on a crime spree.

The trio, friends in their 20s, had robbed 24-hour convenience stores as well as petrol stations using fake guns, apart from committing vehicle break-ins.

Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Shafien Mamat said the trio were nabbed in two separate raids, 45 minutes after receiving reports from the public about a suspicious vehicle at about 7.15pm on Wednesday.

"During the checks, our men found a firearm resembling a pistol in the back pocket of the driver's seat.

“It was later confirmed that the pistol was fake and the vehicle was registered under a female individual.

“We arrested two suspects, including the vehicle owner's son at 8pm the same day and another at 3.30am in Batu 3 this morning ," he said in a press conference today.

Shafien said two suspects tested positive for drugs while another had a prior criminal record.

The three unemployed men have been remanded for four days for investigation under the Arms Act 1960.

Shafien had called for the press conference to clear the air following claims made on social media of a supposed shooting case in Section 15.
