Police nab mother suspected of abandoning baby outside Cheras apartment unit

KUALA LUMPUR: Police today arrested a woman, believed to be the mother of a newborn baby girl who was found abandoned in front of an apartment unit in Cheras yesterday.

Cheras police ACP Chong Kok Sin said the 24-year-old woman was nabbed today at an undisclosed location.

"The woman and a 25-year-old man who was arrested yesterday, have been remanded to assist our investigation until Friday," he said.

It was reported yesterday that a newborn baby girl, with her umbilical cord still attached, was found abandoned on the 12th floor of Putra Suria Residency in Cheras.

Residents found the infant, wrapped in a grey sweater and wearing a diaper, in front of an apartment unit at 2.15pm.

A plastic bag containing diapers, a feeding bottle, milk powder, wet tissues and massage oil, was left next to the baby.

Police have sent the baby to the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre for further checks and alerted the Welfare Department on the finding.
