Education Ministry to review designs, safety features of Putrajaya schools

PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry will review the designs of school buildings to increase their safety features, said its minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

This came about following the death of a Form 3 student, who fell from 3rd floor of the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Presint 9(2) today.

Mahdzir said the designs of schools in Putrajaya were different from conventional ones as they were prepared by Putrajaya Holdings (PJH) instead of the Public Works Department (JKR).

"Therefore, there is an urgent need to review the school designs to increase the current safety features of the schools and classrooms," he told reporters after visiting the school here today.

In the 9.40am incident, Azim Hakimi Abu Shuja, 15, accidentally fell from the third floor of his school as he was trying to help out a classmate retrieve a schoolbag.

Another schoolmate had thrown out the schoolbag belonging to Azim's friend out to the corridor.

It is believed that as Azim went out to the corridor to retrieve the bag, he somehow fell off the side of the building to his death.

Mahdzir had earlier visited the boy's family at the Putrajaya Hospital.
