Patriotism defined by attitude of the people

A S we celebrate National Day, we should take a moment and be grateful for the freedom we’ve had for 59 years.

We may feel that we have shown patriotism through our words and actions, but is waving or displaying flags or, shouting “Merdeka” at the top of our lungs enough to make us patriotic Malaysians?

Former United States politician Adlai Stevenson once said: “Patriotism is not a short and frenzied outburst of emotion but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.”

The seeds of love for our country should not grow only in August; we should keep the love strong in our heart and soul as we make the nation proud with our achievements.

Patriotism is a timeless trend that defines the attitude of its followers. It is also a feeling of pride in one’s country.

True Malaysians are selfless individuals who think about others and help them live a better life.

Unfortunately, many act otherwise and cause misery and tragedy.

The unfair treatment of victims of murder, rape, abduction and slavery is unwarranted.

This violation of human rights shows that some people have manipulated the definition of freedom by acting selfishly and senselessly.

Freedom should be a shared privilege that people celebrate as one family, but the harsh reality forces many to live in fear and danger.

Our warriors who had fought for our independence in the past deserve better. The gift of freedom was made of their blood, toil, tears and sweat.

They were willing to suffer and fall for us. Their spirit was remarkable and their sacrifice, unforgettable. It is our duty to keep and treasure the gift by living harmoniously.

Let us educate our children to love and appreciate the place they are born and bred in. Teach them patriotism, respect, human rights and history.

Remind them about the sacrifices of Malaya’s warriors by telling them stories of the struggles and skirmishes faced by the fighters.

Make them realise the importance of having good manners.

We need to work together in building a nation with strong values, morals and ethics.
