Merdeka! More than 10,000 usher in independence celebration in Bukit Jalil

BUKIT JALIL: Fireworks lit up the night sky moments after a crowd of more than 10,000 gave a rousing rendition of the Negaraku in unison at the Sehati Sejiwa Merdeka Countdown Concert, here tonight.

Waving miniature Jalur Gemilangs throughout the night, the crowd was treated to an array of performances by popular artistes against a backdrop of patriotic images.

Led by Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Syed Keruak in the celebrations at the stroke of midnight, the event also paid homage to the country's Rio Olympics medallists and world-class athletes.

"The presence of such a large crowd of people from all walks of life shows that we all care about our country and are proud of our independence," Salleh announced shortly before celebrations began.

Among the artistes who performed included Dayang Nurfaizah, Faizal Tahir, Tomok, Altimet, Yassin and Fareez.

Two young Syrian refugees also recited an Arabic poem reflecting their experience and gratitude for being in Malaysia.
