Policeman shoots sword-wielding robber in store heist

KUALA LUMPUR: Three robbers, who had attempted to rob the owner of an electrical store in Batu 16, Rawang, were arrested by police, earlier today.

One of the trio, who wielded a samurai sword, was shot when he tried to attack a policeman.

Gombak district police chief Assistant Commissioner Ali Ahmad, said the wounded suspect is currently undergoing treatment at the Selayang hospital.

The incident happened about 4pm.

"The sword-wielding suspect barged into the store and demanded money from the owner. Coincidentally, a policeman and his family were in the store.

"The policeman warned the suspect to surrender but the suspect charged forward to attack. The policeman had no choice but to shoot the suspect."

The wounded suspect ran outside to his accomplice, who was waiting on a motorcycle.

Ali said both of them escaped but the policeman caught another suspect who was also waiting outside the store.

Following the incident, police launched a manhunt and arrested the suspects in Batu 16.

He said the suspects were aged between 20 and 30.

Police believe they have solved several robbery cases in the area following the arrest of the trio.
