SUNGAI PETANI: A 17 year-old teenager was killed when the motorcycle she was riding collided head-on with a bus at Kampung Permatang Merbau, Kota Kuala Muda near here last night.
Norkhairul Badriah Zulkaflie, from Kampung Baru, Belakang Masjid Bakar Arang, died at the scene due to severe injuries to her head and body in the 8.35pm accident.
Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Md Zukir Md Isa said the collision with the bus, which came from the opposite direction, occurred during the victim's failed attempt to overtake two cars in front of her.
"The driver of the bus, which was on its way from a factory in Kuala Muda to Tikam Batu, honked several times upon seeing the victim's motorcycle approaching, but failed to avoid her in time," Zukir said, adding that there were no passengers on the bus when the incident took place.
Due to the impact, Norkhairul was flung from her motorcycle, which was dragged seven metres by the bus, he added.
The victim's body was sent to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for post-mortem.
