Couple killed, three children injured in head-on collision

GERIK: A husband and wife died when the car they were traveling in was involved in an accident near the Banjaran Titiwangsa Rest and Recreation (R&R) area on the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway (JRTB) here, today.

Three children, two boys and a baby girl who were in the same vehicle as the couple, however, survived with injuries.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) deputy director of operations Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad, said that besides the deceased couple, there were eight other victims who were injured in the accident.

He said the accident involved two vehicles, a Proton Persona carrying five victims and a Toyota Innova multipurpose vehicle (MPV) also carrying five victims.

He said the individuals in the Toyota Innova consisted of one man and four women.

"The accident resulted in a total of 10 victims, with no one trapped. Two victims, who were a husband and wife pair, died while the other eight were injured.

"When the fire brigade arrived at the scene, the victims had already been removed, and the firefighters assisted the medical team in managing the victims.

"The victims were sent to Gerik Hospital using ambulances from the Ministry of Health, Civil Defense Force (APM), and Fire and Rescue Department Emergency Medical Response Service (EMRS)," he said in a statement today.

According to him, the emergency call was received at 12.23pm, after which 13 members from the Gerik Fire and Rescue Station dispatched to the scene.
