Kelantan rounds up 123 drug addicts in major 12-hour sweep

KOTA BARU: Kelantan police rounded-up 123 addicts, including a 55-year-old man, in an anti-drug operation carried out in several areas here since last night.

State police chief Datuk Dr Ab Rahman Ismail said police also seized various types of drugs worth about RM17,500, including heroin and pills, during the 12-hour operation which ended at 9am today.

"The operation was aimed at nabbing drug addicts in the state, especially in Kota Baru and Machang districts. Police will continue to carry out similar operations from time to time, as it is our target to reduce the number of drug addicts by 50 per cent this year," he told a Press conference here today.

Dr Ab Rahman said the state police have identified several ‘black areas’ for drug addicts in Kelantan and would continue to `destroy' them one by one.

In a related development, he said police have detained a 33 year-old suspected drug pusher and seized a pistol in an operation at Panji on Sept 12.

"The suspect is believed to have obtained the pistol from his Thai friend that was meant to be used as part of his drug activities," he said.

Dr Ab Rahman said the man was being remanded for six days to facilitate police investigations.
