(Paralympics) Siti Nor Radiah clinches long jump bronze, breaks Asian record

KUALA LUMPUR: Siti Noor Radiah Ismail broke her own Asian record en route to winning the bronze in the women's long jump T20 (intellectual disability) event at the Rio Paralympics today.

This makes her the first ever Malaysian woman to win a medal in athletics at the Paralympics.

The 23-year-old managed 4.71 and 5.06 metres in her first and second attempts in the final before bettering her own Asian record with a leap of 5.20m in the third.

Noor Radiah fouled her fourth attempt but recovered to notch 4.74m and 5.09m in her fifth and final jumps.

Her 5.20m effort was, however, enough to secure her the bronze.

Croatian Mikela Ristoski took the gold with a winning leap of 5.79m while Karolina Kucharczyk came in second on 5.55m.

The Johorean had set the previous Asian record of 5.10m when she won the 2014 Asian Para Games in Incheon.

Siti Noor Iasah Mohamad Ariffin, who had placed second behind Noor Radiah in Incheon, finished fourth in the event on 4.91m.

Noor Iasah had also finished fourth in the 400m T20 (intellectual disability) final on Tuesday, where she had bettered her own Asian record.

Noor Radiah is the fourth Malaysian medalist in Rio after sprinter Ridzuan Mohamad Puzi, shot putter Ziyad Zolkefli and fellow long jumper Abdul Latif Romly, who all won gold in their respective events last week.
