Police to use CCTV footage as lead into schoolboy's death

BAGAN SERAI: Police will use closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage as a new lead for their investigation into an accident which killed a primary school pupil here.

Kerian district police chief Superintendent Omar Bakhtiar Yaakob said a 43-year-old lorry driver has been detained and had his statement recorded yesterday.

He was released on police bail the same day.

“We have already recorded his statement and will continue our investigation with the new lead from the CCTV footage,” he said.

In yesterday’s 7.20am incident, Mohammad Haikal Helme, 10, was killed when he was hit by a lorry while crossing the road towards the entrance of Sekolah Kebangsaan Teluk Medan.

The CCTV footage, believed to have been recorded by the school's security system, went viral after it was shared on social media yesterday.

In the 35-second footage, the victim was seen crossing the road at the designated spot to reach the school entrance.

A crossing guard, who was manning the traffic, had also held up a ‘stop’ sign to allow the pupils to cross the road.

However, the lorry appeared to be unable to brake in time and ran over Haikal, who was walking behind a group of students.

Haikal was pronounced dead at the scene.
