IGP: Msia liaising with Indonesia over seized ship in Bali

PUTRAJAYA: Police are liaising with Indonesian authorities to ascertain reports that a ship from Malaysia, carrying 30 tonnes of fertiliser, has been detained in Bali over terrorism suspicions.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said they have reached out the Indonesian authorities to verify the claims.

Khalid said there has been nothing concrete to suggest that the matter can be related to terrorism.

Yesterday, it was reported that Indonesian authorities in Bali detained a ship from Malaysia carrying around 30 tonnes of fertiliser which the police believe may be used to make bombs.

Customs and police had questioned the crew and were investigating if the fertiliser was on its way to Sulawesi island, which is known for militant violence.

The authorities were quoted as saying they were not shooting down possibility of the material being used by terrorist groups in Sulawesi to make low-impact and high-impact bombs.

Meanwhile, Khalid said it isn't wise to jump to conclusions.

"We are not even sure if the fertiliser and ship are from Malaysia ... do not jump on the assumption but we have contacted the Indonesian authorities to get further details.

"So let us investigate... I think we should be protecting our best interest in this manner.

"If you ask me, 30 tonnes of fertiliser seems like a big amount for terrorism purposes, usually the usage is of a different amount and via a different method," he told reporters after launching the 1Aman Week event here today.

The 1Aman Week is opened to the public from 23 to 25 Sept, held at the Putrajaya International Conventional Centre (PICC).

It aimed at educating and informing people about police work, bridging the gap between police and community, tackle misconception among the people and improve public perception.
