MCA heartened by increase in Chinese support

BUTTERWORTH: There has been an increase in support among the Chinese community for MCA recently, said MCA secretary-general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan.

He said he was optimistic that MCA would fare well in the 14th General Election due to better backing.

"We can see an increase in support compared to the last general election, when the community rejected us entirely because they felt they wanted a new government.

"However, now they see MCA can help them.

"I cannot say how strong the support is, but I know we will fare better in the 14th General Election," he told reporters today after officiating the MCA Bukit Mertajam delegates’ conference here.

Ong said MCA will also mobilise its election machinery to start laying groundwork for the general election.

"We’ll organise more focused, community-based events and other such activities, but not large-scale events with thousands of people attending.

"It is not that we are weak or not performing, it's just that we do not have the allocation to carry out big events." he said.

Ong was asked about Umno deputy president and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zaidi Hamidi's criticism that Gerakan’s and MCA's election machinery was weak.
