(UPDATED) Two killed, several injured as buggy crashes into spectators in Kuantan

KUANTAN: Two people in a family were killed and several others injured after a racing buggy slammed into spectators during the Education Innovation Motorsports and Automotive Race (Eimarace) at Indera Mahkota today.

Company supervisor Izwan Isa, 39, and his four-year-old daughter, Nurzulaikha Izwan were killed at the scene.

His wife, teacher Siti Suhaiza Seman, 38, and son Muhammad Izz Danial Izwan, 7, are in serious condition at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital.

It is learnt the family were among a huge crowd who were standing on the road shoulder to watch the race. The crowd was separated only by plastic barriers placed along the race track.

It is believed a racer who had lost control of his buggy smashed his car into the barriers before ploughing into the victims. District deputy police chief Superintendent Aziz Ahmad confirmed the incident.

He said police are still carrying out investigations.

Eimarace was organised by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with the cooperation of Tourism Pahang.

The race was cancelled following the tragedy.
