No compromise on safety, security

I REFER to reports on the Educational Innovation in Motorsport and Automotive Race accident, which claimed the lives of a man and his 5-year-old daughter.

The event was sanctioned by the Motorsports Association of Malaysia but not approved by the Malaysian Automotive Association as the organisers allegedly did not comply with sporting and safety regulations.

Two precious lives were lost when a buggy veered off the track and ploughed into the spectators.

On Monday, yet another parasailing mishap happened in Batu Ferringhi when a woman got stuck on a pine tree for half an hour before she was rescued. This was the fifth incident involving parasailing this year.

This weekend, the Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix will be held at the Sepang International Circuit and, hopefully, the organisers will not compromise on safety and security. Safety and security planning, authorisation and approval by the agencies, and rules and regulations must be adhered to as there is no compromise when it comes to staging sporting events that have become more challenging and sophisticated.

It is a wake-up call for the authorities to step up enforcement whether at sporting events or the workplace to thwart accidents.

Despite the education, public engagement and enforcement, there is still room for improvement where safety standards and practices are concerned.
