(UPDATE) Robbers escape with RM500k in under 5 minutes

KUALA LANGAT: Four masked men, one armed with a gun, robbed a goldsmith shop and escaped with 12 trays of jewellery estimated to be worth more than RM500,000, in under five minutes yesterday.

The robbers had stormed the goldsmith shop located in a supermarket at about 11.35am as the staff were rearranging the jewellery at the shop’s showcases.

A distress call was made to the Kuala Langat district police station operations room at about 11.50am, said Kuala Langat district police chief Superintendent Zailan Tasir.

He said early investigations showed that the suspects, clad in ski masks, long sleeved shirts and trousers as well as gloves, had gained entry into the premises through the back entrance of the supermarket.

“Closed circuit television cameras (CCTVs) showed that the suspects had parked a silver Naza Citra at the back lane between a building and the supermarket. They alighted from the vehicle and entered the premises via the back entrance. One was armed with a .38 pistol while three more had hammers in their hands.

“The suspects entered the premises, smashed the glass displays and emptied the 12 trays of jewellery. It was over in five minutes and they sped off in the same Naza Citra,” said Zailan.

The goldsmith is believed to have stopped using security two months ago.
