64 foreign workers nabbed in Penang

BUTTERWORTH: The Penang Immigration Department detained 64 foreign workers after screening 97 foreigners under Op Ikrar at two factories at the Perai Industrial Park in Batu Kawan on Monday.

Penang Immigration Department assistant deputy director Fairuz Ismail said during the first operation carried out from 9am to 7pm, a team of 15 enforcement officers from the department detained the 64 foreign workers for various offences.

“Acting on information, the department inspected workers at a factory in Perai and detained 42 of them, comprising 40 women from Indonesia and two men from Bangladesh,” he told Bernama, here today.

Fairuz said in the second operation, 38 foreign factory workers were screened and 22 comprising 18 men and four women were detained. “They comprised 10 from Nepal, seven (Bangladesh), one from Myanmar and four Indonesian women,” he said adding that a number of foreign workers had tried to escape but were nabbed,” he said.

Those detained did not have valid travel documents, overstayed or used their social visit pass to work with work permits. --BERNAMA
