Couple gets 1 year jail term, fine, for abandoning newborn baby

SEREMBAN: The magistrate's court here today sentenced a couple to 12 months’ jail and a fine of RM3,000 for attempting to conceal the birth of their baby.

Muhamad Ridwan Suklan, 22, and Indonesian national Nurmayanti, 20, were charged with intentionally concealing the birth of their newborn baby by abandoning it in the toilet of a petrol station at Seremban Jaya Senawang here on Aug 5 at 5.40am.

Both had pleaded guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Rahimah Rahim ordered that the jail sentence run from the day of their arrest.

The offence, under Section 318 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum two years' jail, fine, or both.

Deputy public prosecutors Soo Kok Weng and Sara Afiqah Zulkipli appeared for the prosecution, while none of the accused was represented.
